Wood Smoke Stories

Wood boiler misery in Kassel

There's a log-fuelled central heater four houses away. I haven't had clean air in my home for years now. It stinks 24/7 all year round. It's not only damaging my lungs, the stress and the powerlessness is making me sick also.

But it gets worse: these heating systems are getting grants because our government thinks it’s a climate-friendly, sustainable way to heat a home/make warm water. So they have become quite popular and our air quality has become poor. Very poor.

The side of a house. Across the way are trees, and trees can be seen in the background. A thick opaque cloud of smoke billows from a chimney on the roof of the house.
