Wood Smoke Stories

Wood boilers in PEI

In PEI Canada, the previous Liberal government placed wood boilers beside nursing homes and schools. Where I worked as a nurse in one of these homes, some days you could smell it inside the building. Not good for anyone!!!!

I worked as a clinical instructor, while working my regular shifts as an RN supervisor at the home here in Charlottetown.

I was in the elevator [at the nursing home] and mentioned that I could smell woodsmoke. When I looked out a window I could see the thick smoke from the boiler going toward the home. I mentioned it to the Occupational Health and Safety chairman that day. Two days later I received a call from the director at the school where I was teaching.

The chairman of the committee had complained to the school, saying I had no right to say anything to the students and/or the general public because I was employed by that same government that put in the wood boilers. The school’s director ignored the complaint, as did I.

They have since said that a filter has been added to the air quality system, but I’ve still been able to smell it. And, residents often go outdoors.

That’s life here in PEI. I call this place, “The Gentle Island of Nobody Cares.”
