Wood Smoke Stories

Smoked-out and driven from home

There was sooo much smoke from the neighbours where we used to live that it would cause a haze in our house. We tried to be good neighbours. We tried to speak to them. There was no interest.

We then spoke to council who gave us brochures to put in their letter box. That was the best they could do.

Finally they said they would only start up their fire at 4pm — not great, but something. We brought them a bunch of flowers as a thank you.

About a month later that deal was off. Then the house on the other side where a nice old lady lived was sold and the new neighbours moved in — fire on constantly.

In the end we sold up. I came across the people that we brought that house off and the husband said that was why they had to sell — because of the smoke. It was making their 8yr old have constant asthma attacks. The child had life-threatening attacks, but the neighbours by law are still allowed to do it.

We did end up with new neighbours that have their fire going constantly. The only good thing is we are a little further away from them. But this one seems to burn plastics or something in their chimney. None of us can have peace of mind until the laws change. As I keep saying, the laws don’t allow people to pump their sewage into water — why oh why are they allowed to pump toxic, noxious smoke into our clean air.
